Ugari Studio and Hiribarren González Arquitectos highlighted the versatility of wood in all types of buildings, using it for the design of the preschool (3-6 years) nursery (0-3 years) of Zaldibar (Spain).
CLT pre-manufactured wood panels were used for the building given its economic profitability and environmentally friendliness. These panels were tailor-made thereby reducing the building execution times.
The 250.65 square metre, one floor, L-shaped building is designed for the primary school and nursery to have separate doors and playgrounds.
Both modules are differentiated on the porches and in the classrooms with the combination of the neutral colour of the wood with brighter colours (preschool: green and nursery: fuchsia pink). The combination of colours in the building and patios create a stimulating or relaxing sensation for children.
Wood sheets were also used on the roofs in a zigzag shape and on the different shape and colour windows that the children use as houses during playtime.
The school complex has been designed following Ecodesign criteria, using technologies and materials developed by local companies and energy generated by a biomass furnace. Furthermore, the windows are strategically arranged to provide the classrooms with natural light throughout the school day, thereby reducing electricity and heating consumption.
